NYFW 2012: A Color Story

Contrary to last season's neons and spring's upcoming pastel trend, this week designer's are overwhelmingly channeling muted jewel tones and neutrals with scattered color punches. Navy, black, grey, and shades of brown found their way onto most runways, but an overwhelming wild card has been burgundy. For me burgundy is only slightly bolder than a neutral, and depending on the undertones can overwhelm or wash out pale skin. Surprisingly, over the years I have collected a number of maroon and burgundy pieces in my wardrobe. While it pairs easily with other standard neutrals, I would rather play it against the rare brighter hues of the week for an easily wearable jolt of color.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! As much as people like to write off today as a Hallmark creation for the flower, card, and chocolate industry--I just love it. Growing up my mom would make a special Valentine's Day dinner complete with chocolate heart lollipops and candy next to the plate. Plus I loved picking out the cards to deposit in everyone's paper bag in the classroom, and then going through my own bag to determine who gave out Ninja Turtle cards and who gave out Looney Tunes.

Now that I am older and won't get a paper bag of friendly notes (sigh), I still look forward to a fun day filled with hugs, kisses, and a fair amount of chocolate. I try not to overdo it for the sanity of the man in my life, and my boyfriend and I have a strict no presents policy for Valentine's Day. However, if you are looking for a little something for your special someone, here are some ideas without a single heart or cupid's arrow in sight.

I've seen lots of young men in the city sporting pocket squares. It's a great way to add a traditional, sophisticated accessory to his modern blazer and jeans.

Happy Monday, I hope you had a great weekend! Winter resettled back on the city just in time to foil the plans of everyone trying to sport their spring ensembles for Fashion Week. I entered this weekend with few plans other than settling on a great outfit for my friend's wedding next weekend. This mission turned into a bit of a debacle, as you can pretty much count on when trying to find the "perfect" piece at the 11th hour. Despite this, my "hiking boots" carried me on a blazing trail through Soho, the West Village, and finished at a Belgian beer bar to rest my feet.

One of the tougher questions for me to answer (next to "where are you from?" but more on that later) is "please define your style." It's hard because, as a lover of style and clothes, I hate to narrow myself into a category of fashion perhaps limiting what I explore or am willing to try in the future. Rather than a clothing category, a better description is definitely the idea/attitude/confidence you aim to exude.

In this month's InStyle, the dynamic designer Prabal Gurung is profiled. When asked about his dream customer he responded:

"A woman who wants to dress with a certain amount of drama, but in a breezy way--like Sarah Jessica Parker. She is happy whether she is in a structured Giambattista Valli suit or a wild Philip Treacy fascinator. She's comfortable enough with herself to a make a mistake. You'll never hit a home run if you are unwilling to strike out."

Can you think of a better answer?! Relaxed glamour, comfortable boundary pushing-- I think that is a perfect explanation.

Beauty Basics: Beating the Under Eye Battle

My mom, her mom, and maybe her mom, provided me with some lovely beauty genes and traits. However, one of the biggest ~~curses~~ blessings are prominent dark under eye circles. I recently learned, thanks to a Glamour article, that mine are likely pigmentation rather than veins i.e it's genetics not aging (phew!) You can figure this out by pulling the under eye skin taut. If it gets darker or changes color it's likely veins, if it stays the same it's pigmentation. I could have told myself this seeing as I've been covering the up since sixth grade with fairly translucent eye shadow once I saw my mom slathering on the concealer every day. On a day to day basis I am incredibly low maintenance in the beauty department, but this is one issue that I do not take lightly.

I had a fairly reliable concealer routine until the end of last year when I was fed up. My normal concealer was settling in the creases around my eyes, getting caked with mascara flecks, and my less than sun glistening skin was aggravating the purple hue. I made a trip to Sephora with my sister and mom for a serious intervention. With a few tweaks from their suggestions I have arrived at a routine that I can happily say makes me appear well rested and bright eyed...for now.

This Benefit product is the new addition to the arsenal. On its own the product is very light colored, and can appear a bit chalky. However, underneath the concealer it provides a great base to hold coverage, and provide a smooth foundation against any creases.

This Cover Girl concealer is a drugstore bargain and provides plenty of coverage for me when layered with the above. I first apply the Cover Girl tinted moisturizer blended with my Clinique moisturizer all over for a very sheer layer of color and "glow." I find that having a nice dewy glow makes the purple circles more bearable from the start.

I have incredibly sensitive skin and so far this routine has caused zero irritation. What's your biggest beauty concern?

Growing up, I came to the realization that if I must sit in a corporate environment for hours on end, I absolutely had to do it in the ultimate power wear. This included the staggering heel of poke your eyes out pointy heels. This idea shifted to the back of my mind for several years until I met Ms. Carrie Bradshaw. She brought the pointy toe heel back in the most unconventional of ways. Whether paired with baggy jeans, a slinky dress, or even cut off capris pants, the sexiness and inherent power of these shoes is undeniable. I've never worn a pair of super pointy heels out of the house, but I have teetered around the dressing room in a few. With the resurgence of this style, this seems like the perfect time to stand up tall and take them for a power spin.

Breaking Down the Carpet

I generally don't get wrapped up in award shows. I haven't seen most of the movies, but I do love calling it an early day on an award show Sunday, grabbing a glass of wine, and camping out on the couch to screech, hiss, and comment on the red carpet arrivals. (Although I do have my favorite shows, and am thrilled for the Modern Family cast win!) I found the Golden Globes a little predictable, but actually really enjoyed the SAG carpet.

Everyone seems to be talking about Kyra Sedgwick's new tattoo, but frankly who wouldn't wear cut outs if they look this good at her age> Also, without a doubt, Pucci is never a bad choice. Lea and Dianna both completely redeemed themselves after questionable Golden Globe gowns. I loved Dianna's braid and bright pink, but why were Lea's shoes so so big? Also, these girls took major risks for the Golden Globes, and got torn to shreds. Dianna's really was pretty awful, but did Lea just push it too far in her Marchesa? Could this by why most stars are not taking Cathy Horyn's notes to heart? Also, Michelle looks phenomenal minus the shoes, a true testament to the power of accessories!

Angelina Jolie got named to pretty much every best dressed list for the Golden Globes, and frankly I wasn't a fan. It looked pretentious and overly structured, and did anyone else catch the near flash walking up the E! stairs? I'm so glad she brought back her gothic rocker tendencies with this Jenny Packham gown. It reminded us that pre six children, this was the woman who wore a vial of blood and leather pants on the red carpet.
Ashlee Simpson looked beautiful, I have no idea why she was there but she looked great. On the other end of the spectrum, Emma Stone is the name on everyone's lips right now. I questioned whether she could top the show stopping Calvin Klein platinum blonde combination, but last night she did. I adore this full tea length skirt. Combined with the amazing shoes and swept up do, it is the perfect balance of retro and modernity.
Finally I love Kristen Wiig. Unfortunately, everyone is talking about the 90's choker clogging her neckline, but I think the dress is beautiful, and love her new dark hair. This is a major year for the Bridesmaids cast, and with a couple of missteps along the way, I hope they knock it out of the park for Oscar night.

Chic-spiration: Change it Up

When I saw this photo browsing through Tommy Ton's street style shots, the first thing that flashed in my mind was Jenny from the Block circa the risque Versace dress era. Which, when you consider the rest of the photos in this series of Anna Dello Russo, and the fact that she was wearing a watermelon on her head not to long ago, seems a little out of character.

But, for today's Chic-spiration, she is the perfect role model. There are always styles, materials, colors, and textures that we gravitate towards. I will always zone in on watermelon pink, something with sparkle, a stacked heel, and avoid khaki like the plague. However, stepping out of this comfort zone is what helps us avoid a style rut, and missteps are part of the learning process. Just because you define your style as "preppy" does not mean you have to spend years on end in nautical stripes and box pleats, and working to define a personal style should be an expansion process rather than a limitation.

A Plea for Glossy Print

Yesterday, I arrived to my office with no internet service, and as I wrote this three hours later, on standard college rule loose leaf, we were still waiting for the green light of connectivity. Two of us plus the actual serviceman were squinting bleary eyed at our phones searching for some sort of ~~time killer~~/ entertainment. However, one lucky lady found a two month old copy of Cosmo in her desk. This got me thinking about the power of glossy, page flicking, magazine spine smelling print. I've long been a vocal fan of why magazines must survive, and today my Twitter feed is alive with talk of new technology, social streams, and data feeds. Here are a few ways in which the glass screen clearly can not compete with the printed magazine.

Bookmarking vs Tear out: It seems everyone today is touting the power of Pinterest. The future is curated content for when you want to browse, coupled with the suggestions of your friends. I too have gone on frenzies pinning every outfit, faux fur throw, sock shoe pairing, and two toned sofa I want to replicate. It's helpful since my bookmarks were about to bulge out of their virtual folder. But, I also have a real paper folder that holds a fully dogearred picture of a kitchen I one day plan to somewhat recreate. It is a mixture of Alice and Olivia and Alice in Wonderland courtesy of a back issue of House Beautiful. I have no idea what issue it is from, but it is a reminder scrap for the day I decide to redo a house, as a grown up.

By the Glow of the Night Light: There are a number of studies and articles (printed and digital alike) aimed at helping our sleep deprived society, which say: a glowing screen signals your mind to wake up; hence, you won't fall asleep anytime soon. However, nothing gets me excited for bed time like a new monthly issue. I'll curl up and start reading the editor's letter like the start of a novel. The editorial spreads have often influenced what I wear in that night's dreams (no joke!) and subscription cards make the perfect bookmark.

The Secret Source: What was your first real magazine subscirption? Mine was Girls' Life (sorry Scholastic you don't count). I even got the subscription carried over when we moved to Australia! Some issues were fun frivolous hair ideas and Lip Smacker samples. But once every year there was the issue that held all of the secrets, that you stored in my bedside table and was knowingly folded and bent. It explained why you wanted to scream at your BFF, how to secretly shave your legs, acne treatments from toothpaste, and how long exactly this new "situation" ws going to last. I'm not up to date on what the new tween/teen magazine is, but for the sake of the Bieber fan base I hope there is one. Sneaking off to the computer late at night is not nearly as comforting as flipping to familiar p. 23.

Inspiration Boards: Thanks to every fashion blog and website, I know you make beautifully inspiring spreads for the digital screen. But what about when you don't want to copy, right click, crop, resize, and rotate. To me this is never as satisfying, but is more like the conclusion, to going to town on a stack of issues with scissors and a glue stick.

With the rise of cable news and online immediacy, the newspaper has to get creative to stay current, and a magazine will never beat Style.com for rapid runway coverage, but do you still believe there is a place for glossy, thumb flicking, corner turning, magazine print?

The First Snow

This weekend New York received the first snow fall of the season. It came considerably later than last year, but after last year's massive snow storms and long recovery, I didn't particularly mind the delay.

Saturday morning we woke up to cloudy skies and a solid dusting of untouched powder. Late in the afternoon, feeling less groggy from my cold, we wandered to the west side which was a virtual white ghost town. The river was choppy, and there were a few very brave joggers, but otherwise the paths were smooth, slushy, and empty.

It is hard to feel particularly stylish when completely bundled up against the elements. However, I am pleasantly surprised by these thick knit Hue leggings. I loved the look of these immediately, but doubted how they would hold up in truly chilly temperatures. Thankfully, the sweater knit is entirely opaque, very warm, and a great change up from standard cotton leggings and skinny jeans to tuck into your snow boots.

Happy Friday! Unfortunately the rampant changes in weather and pushing myself to the brink has caught up with me in a big messy, sore throat, mucus filled kind of way (too much?) So as I'm huddled up with some blankets and a cup of tea, I found this print from Julia's online store. Wouldn't this be fun to have in your house? Sure it's not an outfit inspiration, but the holidays are over, the weather has turned arctic, and the reality of fulfilling New Year's resolutions is daunting- so a pep talk on your wall seems like a smart idea. Happy Birthday Charlie

Today I would like to introduce you to a very special little man in my life. He has been my longest running roommate in New York, has lived with me in five apartments, one epic snowstorm, and countless late work nights. Please meet Mr. Charles Dickens aka Charlie.

Charlie was a birthday present not long after my arrival in New York, and I can confidently say my parents were less than thrilled- how was I supposed to take care of small puppy when I was unemployed and living on the balcony of my boyfriend’s apartment with his two roommates? But this little guy is a trooper.

Together we mastered potty training from a 4^th floor apartment. I would tuck his tail, wait for the elevator, and coach him nicely as we wandered between the bankers and garbage bags on Park Ave (later cleaning up any puddles in the elevator). Thankfully he was a quick learner. Next we moved into our very own apartment, with three unknown roommates, and no window. Charlie was still a trooper, if less enthusiastic. I cried the day I came home to find he was far too hot in my room and feeling ill. We spent a lot of time with the very large bulldog across the street on St. Mark’s because a.) it was cooler b.) we were living with insane people. This bulldog was also unneutered and gave Charlie an abrupt lesson in standing up for himself.

Charlie took a small vacation with my parents while I attended night school and got a taste of a large Kentucky yard, and living with a large female lab. He came home to me via Delta to our very own apartment. He promptly chewed through two pairs of shoes, but we bonded over late night eats when he was thrilled I was home from the gym, and quietly avoidedthe hoarder across the hall. However, friendly to a fault, Charlie would not quickly walk by our neighbor as she sorted her newspapers from 1993, and became a favorite of old ladies and gents on every floor.

Next Charlie and I moved to the East Village. We loved our morning walks when it was completely silent except for a random late night partier wandering home. He befriended every superintendent who hung out in front of their building, I feel watching out for me as the sun came up. This is where Charlie became very comfortable sleeping on my bed to avoid the mice running around the floor.

Finally Charlie and I have moved in with the boy. Charlie is very comfortable with our new full time roommate. He enjoys late night wrestling matches, naps on someone else’s stomach, multiple sneaky treats, and sleeping on the foot of the bed. He hesitantly enjoys baths in a full size bathtub and a duo of hairdressers trimming his coat with clippers and a comb on the kitchen floor. Charlie is an up for anything buddy, be it a four mile run in the freezing cold (he bops along with the tunes I hum), a long car trip to the beach, or even being unexpectedly thrown into the waves.

He may only be turning 3 years old today, but we have had a wonderful journey of adventures so far. Happy Birthday Mr. Dickens!

The Girly Girl Revival Guide

There are certain outfits from my younger years that I hope never again see the light of day. I'm thinking specifically of a neon green sweater resembling astro turf. However, have you noticed recently, pieces dubbed juvenile are making a comeback? This could be the reason why I wish the majority of the the "Crew Cuts" collection was made in adult sizes.

My wheels started turning a few days ago when I saw these glittery toe caps on Louis Vuitton's pumps (amazing!!) I lusted after glittery Mary Jane's when my feet barely touched the ground, and weren't these the original source of all the Suri Cruise controversy?

Colored Corduroy: These I know I wore many days in grade school- I hated the whistling noise! The boy's first reaction to my dandelion yellow Gap chords? "Those look like little kid pants." But now you can hardly get down the street without tripping over cobalt and cherry red pants...and I adore them for a jolt of color.

Tulle Skirts: This is the little girl party staple, and I will proudly admit that I wore this one on New Year's Eve. It is still an ultimate party piece.

Hair Ornaments: What little girl isn't wearing bows and ribbons in her silky un-highlighted locks? Now, (I'm blaming Gossip Girl) grown girls sport everything from glittered headbands to bouquets in their buns.

I'm not going to complain about any of these resurgences...with the exception of the aforementioned afro turf sweater. I love channeling these little girl styles in a grown up combination. Just don't pair them all together as you likely did for a third grade birthday party. Are you reviving any of your favorite girly styles?

Arctic Mix & Match

I hope you all enjoyed a lovely long, if chilly, weekend! Since I was feeling a little under the weather on Saturday night, we pushed our date night until Sunday. Unfortunately, on Sunday the weather dropped to absolutely arctic temperatures. I still wanted to look flirty and girly, so I doubled up on top layers, turned up the shearling collar under my thick wool coat and hustled through the crisp wind. Minus the flaming red nose upon our arrival at the restaurant, I think this outfit worked perfectly.

This week's chic-spiration is of the hair variety. I've been growing my hair out for over a year- ever since the tragic haircut of Thanksgiving 2010. I've finally settled back into my long, thick hair routine, which I love. However, I've never been one who is particularly talented working with my hair, but seeing all of the fun updos sporting around have me itching to try it. I don't love a super tight top knot, but a swept up messy cluster of hair, possibly with some sparkly accouterments ,seems right up my alley. Plus, between the wind, snow, and woolly scarves, I have a feeling this could help me avoid the dreaded winter dreadlock debacle. I'm using these ladies for inspiration as I practice my "easy" messy updos, do you have any tips?

Disorganized Chaos

Yesterday's fun post on the newest trends and themes in jewelry got me thinking about a less fun debacle I'm facing at home: how to house my piles of baubles?!

I rarely get rid of any jewelry. I still have earrings and rings from grade school, but feel a sentimental attachment to many pieces, or am just too intimidated to attack the box (es). However, the piles are becoming overwhelming. Anytime I reach for a bottle of perfume, several bangles come flying back at me. If I reach for a hairbrush it comes tangled with a side of a chandelier earring. The only area that is slightly organized are my necklaces thanks to a hanging set of wire hooks. I've decided to attack this situation head on in an attempt to eliminate the clutter and take better care of my pieces.

Without any real idea of how to start, and aiming for this to take as little time as possible, I took to Google. I am hoping to work with vertical space rather than take up table space (thanks Nate Berkus for the tip!) This organizer from Etsy is genius, if a little pricey. This one is really adorable, but doesn't offer quite enough space. I'm still on the hunt, how do you organize your jewels?

Baubles and Jewels in Review

I spent the last two days pounding the pavement up and down the west coast of Manhattan for the Accessories trade show circuit including The Accessories Show and Intermezzo. I have experienced these shows from both the buyer and exhibitor side, and as exhausting as they are (standing all day, pushy rude buyers, and headache inducing fluorescent, convention lighting) they are still one of the best forecasts of what will be on store shelves next season. Plus, in between the trade show veterans you always hope to (and normally do!) find some promising new designers.

Although I focused on jewelry and small accessories, there were some very distracting shoes yanking my gaze (color blocking is sticking around for spring in sky high suede wedges pairing earth tone neutrals with neon blocks- fabulous!)

However, in terms of baubles and jewels, the scene is look very fun indeed for spring. Imagine Elizabeth Taylor sized costume rocks mixed with layers of matte chain and a dusting of rock & roll details.

Boulder Baubles: Jewelry seems to be leaning in the direction of "fake it till you make it." Perhaps it's a reflection of the economy, but if you can't afford a real rock there are still plenty of gem stones the size of your head that dazzle beautifully.

Silver Lining: Many designers I spoke to reflected on the rising cost of gold making their own prices sky rocket, and become very unstable. Many are therefore introducing, or increasing their sterling silver collection as well as gold vermeil, coating, and brass.

Layer Up: As you pile on your turtleneck, scarf, jacket, and vest, it seems jewelry is going in the same direction. Long strands of necklaces are made to be piled on, and the trend of layering wrist wear is definitely sticking around. Many designers are also offering pieces for the layering - phobe. Tangled mixed media necklaces offer the look of layered necklaces in one piece. I also saw less crater sized cocktail rings, but rather small stackable rings with asymmetrical stones. As much as I fear taking a nap and waking up strangled in a tangle of chain, I can't get enough of this look!

Rock Chain Reaction: Most of the layered pieces I reviewed had a funky, rustic vibe, and this is often a result of the matte or gunmetal finish of the chain. Although shiny silver and gold still exists, flat finish chain offers a cohesive and funky look when layered into a single piece.

Although I noticed few major shifts in jewelry trends, I love the overall direction. These pieces are made to be fun, whimsical, piled on for every day wear, and no saving all of your favorite pieces for a special occasion!

Fashion Swing

Hello and Happy Monday! It is very rare that I pull myself together for a Monday post, but surprise, surprise here I am. I attended my second hot yoga class of the year last night, and although I am incredibly sore I feel surprisingly calm and relaxed for the start of the week. I'm not at all a "zen" following person, but I'm starting to believe there could be truth in the yoga rumors. Adding to the good vibes this morning was a fun and productive weekend filled with organizing, furniture rearranging, a walk on the High Line due to unseasonably warm weather, and one of my favorite outfits of the winter featuring polka dots, velvet, chambray, and big jewels.

For people working in the fashion industry however, stress levels are likely rising rapidly. This week begins the trade show circuit in New York, and we are just a few weeks away from New York Fashion Week. Style.com created a compilation of what they expect to see at the shows and on the award show red carpets. It's a fun recap of the pre-fall shows, and a look forward at what to expect when the city steps it up in just a few short weeks.

New Year: Steps to Refresh

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful time celebrating, and hopefully relaxing a bit however you chose.

I'm a bit late returning to the swing of things as I had a very important project to finish by midnight (nothing like a tight deadline to kick off the year!) In any case I like to officially kick off my resolutions, goals, and plans of attack on the 2nd of January. The 31st is for blowing off any residual steam, the 1st is for relaxing and at our house a whole lot of football, and on the 2nd you get yourself back in the game with a vengeance!

I have a list of goals and small resolutions for 2012 that I plan to spread out over the coming year so as to avoid collapsing in an overwhelmed heap on 1/15. However, a fun style change up is always something I like to try straight out of the gate. While I don't believe in the phrase, "I can't pull it off" I do believe in style ruts. In particular when 2012 has ushered in freezing temps (it's 13 degrees outside!) which encourages throwing on the biggest jacket known to man over woolly pants, boots, and multiple shirts. Rather than settle into style lacking hibernation, I suggest pushing for one funky change to see how it changes your vibe. At the very least you'll likely gain a spring in your strut, or receive some fun double takes in the office. Here are some ideas:

Get Lippy: I have been slow to embrace the bold lip trend. I tend to play up my eyes with lots of lashes and a black cat eye, or funky colored liner underneath. If you are normally like me, maybe try a berry stain, or be bold and go for bold cherry. Or vice versa? If you are notorious for your matte neon pink lips, try a nude gloss with intense eyes.

So Clutch: This one requires a little reorganization, but try switching up your purse routine. I reach for a big carryall on a daily basis, but sometimes on the weekend I'll leave my necessities in the bag from the night before for errands. You feel so light and chic carry around just the essentials in your everyday get up. If you carry a boho sack, try a ladylike top handle bag, or an oversized clutch. Even if you switch back after a week, you might save yourself some back problems down the road.

Baubly Bits: When we are all bundled up in scarves, knits, and puffer coats it can be easy to leave off your sparkly accessories. But I feel much more pulled together and awake with a statement necklace, big earring, or bold cocktail ring. On your way out the door, slip off your gloves to throw on the bangles you haven't touched since the holiday party circuit. If people normally see you in tiny studs, frame your face around your beanie with some dangly chandeliers earrings and wait for the compliments...

Crafting Color: As I mentioned a few weeks ago, it is easy to slip into a neutral rut for most of the winter months. Even if you stick to neutrals most of the year, pair your parka with colorful winter accessories, or grab some colorful winter boots on clearance to swap into your routine. You will instantly catch new eyes, and likely lift your own mood simultaneously.

A few more? Switch up your hair (bangs, dip dye, lowlights?), if you are a mini girl try a midi, add heels to your outfit if you normally sport flats in the office, add some false lashes, double wrap a skinny belt across your stand by sweater, nail art!, leave out your contacts and sport your geek chic frames, cuff your jeans with tights (I love this look!)

In a few short hours I will be hopping on a plane to spend several days with my family in Kentucky. The boy and I did a rapid wrap up of all of our Christmas shopping last night, and then had a cozy dinner in an adorable restaurant decked out in Christmas lights and greenery. I am incredibly excited to sit in my mom's kitchen stuffing my face, bouncing new ideas off my dad, probably trimming my brothers hair, and chatting with my sister at her rapid speeds.

It has been a crazy, at times trying, yet exciting and inspiring 2011! Thank you so very much for dropping by this blog throughout your own busy weeks. I love reading your comments and hearing your thoughts and comments get pinged around the twitterverse!

Last Minute Gift...Times

Have you finished all of your holiday shopping? I have two more presents to think up and purchase before Sunday's deadline and I am on an endless spree of combing through ideas.

Although unfortunately unfit for the people I am left pondering, my parents gave me a wonderful gift earlier this year that I highly suggest for any fashion lover and inquisitive family member: The New York Times Sunday edition. I know it sounds incredibly pretentious and intellectual (at least I thought so), but hear me out.

When you order the Sunday paper you actually get the Sunday Times, and a small delivery on Saturday morning. Apparently some Sunday sections are printed Saturday, but dated Sunday (quite sneaky). I'll admit, I rarely unfold the paper on Sunday, but last night I studied the Style Section with a glass of vino, while the boy made spaghetti and it was fantastic!

Before receiving this gift, I knew Bill Cunningham's name, but didn't know he was the photographer behind the themed weekly montage of capes, cobalt, or Santa Con. Last night, I got lost in Charles Isherwood's behind the scenes, and slightly sartorial peek into the Elizabeth Taylor jewelry auction. Nothing all week made me straighten my back and reconsider my jeans rotation like "What I Wore" featuring the weekly wearings of Dita Von Teese (corsets anyone?) Finally, I find no other fashion publication includes the factual, historical, and business noteworthy like the paper, including a spine tingling account of Francois Lesage, a legendary embroiderer to every couturier from Karl Lagerfeld to Yves Saint Laurent.

Beyond the Style Section, having the entire paper sprawled out encourages me to take a peek at business news, get a handle on world events through the front page section, indulge in a weekly (!) glossy magazine, and get lost in fantastical day dreams in the Travel and Real Estate bundles. It really is an eye opening and stimulating gift, and frankly something I had never thought to pay for and treat to myself.

Holiday Packing

On Friday I am heading home for several days to celebrate Christmas and hang out with my family. This trip is always a difficult packing dilemma to tackle. I want to look pulled together and celebratory, but feel incredibly comfortable. There will be loads of eating and lounging, plus I need to fit all of my presents for the family into my suitcase along with my clothes. Here are my tips for packing for a multitude of holiday occassions in one suitcase:

Skinny denim: When I'm tight on space I skip boot cut and opt for a skinny pair of jeans. They can be worn tucked into boots and with heels whereas I only where my bootcut jeans with a lift. Plus they are extra stretchy (comfort points). I will likely also throw in my awesome corduroy leggings (they're small!)

Velvet: I plan on wearing a velvet mini skirt for Christmas day with a cozy sweater and boots. Velvet has such a short time limit in seasonal dressing, and as I mentioned yesterday it is closely associated with Christmas in my book.

Boyfriend sweater: I love loose, relaxed tops with fitted denim and leggings for relaxed celebrations. I especially look for cowl necks and deep v-necks since they show a bit of skin to balance out the draping, i.e cancel out the frumpy factor.

Long Sleeve T's: Easy to layer, warm and comfortable, and not too bulky for wearing under a jacket, these are what I will reach for most of the week to get ready quickly and get back in the action.

Sneakers: This may not work for everyone, but I always work out when I go home. While exercising often gets pushed back in my regular work week (especially recently!) I love taking time out to run or walk outdoors when I'm home. It is a great time to chat with the family, or take a necessary solo break.

Cute Cozy PJs: Oddly enough, I often find my favorite pairs stored away in a dresser at home! But make sure they are on hand, no one wants to get caught in sloppy sweats for Christmas morning photos! (I love these and they are so warm!)

Final tip: If you are planning ahead (i.e more than 2 hours before the flight takes off) take time to make sure your pieces are in a similar color family, coordinating patterns, or vibing in the same direction- it makes pulling together quickie outfits much easier. Safe travels everyone!

When I was younger, several Christmas days were spent in a poofy velvet dress that my mom created (often matching my sister). This weekend my parents were in town for a four day weekend. It was fantastic to have an extra long visit so I didn't attempt to cram every possible activity into two days. The visit was full of eating, shopping, wandering, and bundling up against the newly dropping temperatures.

One of my favorite trends this year is faux fur. While definitely not a new trend, seeing it in stores only reinforced my minor obsession. I now have three faux pieces, here, here and above. I love the cozy clash with ultra glamorous, without the heeby jeeby inducing feelings of the real deal.

Chic-spiration: Weighty Layers

On Wednesday I "attended" my very first #StyleChat hosted by StyleCaster. It sounds bizarre, but frankly I was ready to jump out of my office window and needed a bit of a break: enter the Twitterverse. I have never gotten so wrapped up in an online conversation and was shooting out answers, replies, and retweets at rapid speed.

One question that got thrown out, and is often top of mind this time of year: how to layer without adding bulk and stiffness. The answer-it's a weighty issue. As cozy as it sounds to wrap up in cashmere sweaters, a leather jacket, shearling vest, and giant chunky knit scarf, you will also feel slightly like the Michelin man.

This lady photographed by Tommy Ton got it beyond correct. The wispy layers and bold colors create a dynamically layered look without hiding her silhouette or any bulk. While this look lacks the warmth necessary for the cold front moving into the city, it is definitely worthy fodder for chic-spiration.

For the first time since living away from home, I have put up a real Christmas tree. Last year I bought a small pine shrub which stood on a bookshelf, but this year we have a real, nearly 6 foot beauty. I love the smell and how it completely transforms the room into a holiday state of affairs. Luckily Charlie is adjusting well to the plant in our house and has not, as I feared, lifted a leg.

This past weekend I took a stroll uptown to take in the holiday lights, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, and the unbelievably crowded yet mesmerizing window displays. Coloring the Chill

Yesterday as I was waiting at the bus stop on a very brisk street in Brooklyn I realized: it is cold. Shocker I know, since it is the first day of December, but every year the first cold snap of air sneaks up on you only to smack you in the face when you least expect it (and when you are less than prepared with your cute, but not entirely wind proof, coat.)

There are certain things that will always pop into my head when making decisions. For instance before bed I can hear my mom telling me not to go to bed with a sink full of dishes. When embarking on a road trip, I can hear my dad tell me to include sensible shoes, water, flashlight, and a warm coat in the trunk. You know, in case you break down in the mountains and have to hike to the nearest gas station. Finally, when making a large purchase, I can hear a number of people telling me to choose a neutral. My grandmother used to constantly reiterate that if you get a crazy pattern, you can only wear it around the same people one time. I never really agreed with this argument, yet I still have predominately black and grey coats.

I am not a huge fan of black and grey as dominant colors, in fact I like to avoid wearing them at least a few days a week. However, my black coat is fairly new, has a fun shape, and key point, incredibly warm. So my new tactic is to down play a dullish color by framing it in eye popping accessories accented with bold colors and plenty of glitz. Here's to keeping away the winter doldrums...

Holiday Swing

Hello! I hope everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving had an absolutely fantastic holiday weekend. I had a long five day weekend with my family full of eating, shopping, and lounging. The highlights were probably hanging out in my mom's kitchen while she created more and more and more delicious snacks, let alone the killer feast on Thursday! Oh, and trying to get my entire family in a Christmas card photo via camera timer...enough said.

Once the piles of turkey and stuffing settle into my stomach, I often feel like a 30 day dash until Christmas begins. Between work, shopping, and travel plans it is very easy to forget to enjoy the whole season. In previous years I commuted uptown and regularly passed the Christmas lights and decorations. Now that I am commuting in a very different direction, I am creating a list of goals to enjoy the season.

1. Take one, or a few, trips uptown just to soak in the lights, store windows, and tree

2. Decorate the apartment! I've never done more than a single ornament, but this year I am getting a tree and decking it out!

3. Buy the tree (should come before #2)

4. Purchase Charlie's Christmas handkerchief (hopefully less traumatizing than his Halloween costume)

5. Make holiday cookies and bourbon balls (nothing relaxes me quite like a sugar high)

6. Make an effort to incorporate extra bling, bells, and glitter in my wardrobe- nothing screams holidays like daily dazzle!

This is just the start but I'm feeling excited already!

Turkey Time

It is T minus 8 hours until I take off for Turkey time and I am so excited. I can't believe how quickly this past quarter of the year is flying by, so I am making a conscious effort to step back, breathe, and enjoy.

My mom is a pretty incredible cook (I'm still waiting for this gene to kick in) so Thanksgiving is something like the food Superbowl in my house. Unfortunately, last year, the chef had an emergency ER visit after slicing her finger on the mandolin. It was a high pressure afternoon when the rest of the family pulled out all of the stops to save the meal. I would prefer this not to happen again on Thursday!

Also, this is the one day of the year when leggings can be considered pants out of necessity, Enjoy!

Yes this is the same video from last year, but to me it is quintessential Thanksgiving!

Happy Friday! We made it through the week and here in New York we are settling in for what should be a very brisk and fall like weekend.

To kick off the weekend I found this great series of videos from the team at DVF. My favorite so far is "Diane on Beginnings." I am always fascinated by how celebrities and designers find their way into kick starting their careers. Did they have a turning point, a significant class or experience, or a family dynasty? In her soft raspy voice Diane gives a whirlwind recap of the steps that led to her creating her iconic wrap dress. It includes a rather hilarious realization in a speeding Maserati! As a leader within the fashion industry and a role model for independent women, it is a fabulous peek inside her story, and amazingly colorful closet.

Next week my whole family will be heading home for Thanksgiving, and I am thrilled. So this afternoon, I sprinted across the street, in the rain, and got my nails done. It sounds silly, but I always get a manicure before travelling home.
Even when I was younger, I always associated well manicured fingers with a lady who "has it together." It sounds silly since in New York since manicures are an inexpensive and fun treat, but I'm sticking with my theory. Even when I am soaking up every moment of being cared for at home, stuffing myself full of baked goods, and lounging off a food coma in high school sweats, I will at least look like the big city girl who "has it together." Yes, I am completely confident my family sees right through my attempts, but they always compliment the color!

Here are some of my favorite colors for fall including newbies, oldie but goodies, and who can resist the Muppets?!

Big Apple: The bright red for when you need classic lady red nails with a punch.
You're a Pisa Work: Uber girly pink, when a girl just needs pink.
Pamplona Purple: I love bright purple in the summer, and this has the regal, exotic factor without being too brooding.
Bobbing for Baubles: My friend got this color on a whim, and it is just insanely cool looking.
Turquoise & Caicos: One of my all time favorites, I completely disagree that it is only for warm weather.
Cuckoo for this Color: A funky mix of forest green and turquoise, definitely an attention grabber.

Manic Mixing

I'll admit, near the end of last week I was running low on steam and had a day full of appointments around the city. I ripped off and threw on well over 5 outfits before finally deciding on a group of trustworthy separates. Unknowingly, I believe this was the first time I pattern mixed for a work occasion, but the varying print size and neutral colors worked well and were more than appropriate.
On a less fortunate note, I arrived home to find that these trustworthy boots had officially been worn through after countless years. C'est la vie, it was a good run guys.

Chic-spiration: Spade for Spade

I have been hearing rave reviews for the talented editors, quaint charm, and fantastical appeal of Matchbook Magazine for months - it seems like everyone on the interweb is addicted! However, I will fully admit that I only scanned through a few issues up until this afternoon. (I'm an old school print magazine addict.) Today I clicked over and lost well over an hour clicking through the gorgeous layouts and getting completely absorbed in their digitally glossy feature on the Spades.

I love the story of Kate and Andy Spade, but until this article had not read an interview with them together. There seems to be an honest business respect as well as a college sweet heart love story that balances into a true power duo. They are completely humble and homey, but still with a spirited fire not to retire after launching and selling their namesake label (apparently a new project is in the works).

Today they are the weekly Chic-spiration for their combination of class, humility, business sense, and reality. They've created a signature aesthetic of prep and quirk that still resonates in the Liz Claiborne brand. OK and a pretty killer statement necklace and teased updo!

**A funny side note: During one of my jobs, I worked with the manufacturer produced for Kate Spade in her very early years. Story has it that the infamous black name label was actually sewn on the outside by mistake!

Lessons in Leopard Print

Charlie has a soft spot for leopard too

Like most people it seems, I have a soft spot for leopard spots, cheetah print, and every other variation of feline fur. However, it seems like every great trend, there are now a plethora of incredibly cheap and tacky renditions of leopard print popping up. Last week I came across some shoes that had the fuzzy texture of felt with incredibly uniform spots, basically a beige and black version of black and white polka dots. I feel like the spotted pattern is just as important as a natural looking color palette and interesting texture.

A Fresh Take: Joe Fresh NYC

Yesterday the boy and I layered up and went for a wander around downtown Manhattan. I keep a running list in my head of places I want to visit as I pass them on runs, running errands, or out the window of a cab. It's always satisfying to actually check a few off the list.

One that got checked off the list yesterday was the newly opened Joe Fresh on Fifth Ave. Joe Fresh is a Canadian export that has landed in New York with quite a scene, Joe Zee was part of the official welcome party! The Joe Fresh brand is sold in over 300 stores in Canada and is the brain child of Club Monaco founder Joe Mimran. I expected the store to be another H&M, Zara fast fashion export with cheap basics and a few over the top fashion-y pieces that you purchase on a whim when you have big plans and "nothing to wear."

Instead I found Joe Fresh to have great selection of super soft cashmere, skinny jeans, corduroys, and bold pops of color in every corner. A certain fringe skirt kept catching my eye as well as funky vests and a faux fur stole. What really impressed me though was the quality. Although I have yet to wear any items around, there wasn't the sheerness, loose threads, and odd cuts often found at the usual fast fashion outlets.

Knitwear 911

I feel like the first day of November is the official day that we slide into fall. Halloween falling on a Monday made it feel as if the costumes and candy high lasted for well over four days. As fun as it is, I am slightly relieved to wear off the sugar coma, snuggle into some knitwear, and start thinking about the rest of the cold weather holidays.

Regarding knitwear, I have come to an unfortunate realization. In my last apartment there seems to have been some type of leak that left a large yellow stain front and center on the majority of my sweaters (including this one of my favorites!) Rather than playing like a troll and hoping people will rub the spot, I am in need of replenishing for sweater weather. I am pretty specific in my criteria: I like sweaters to be loose almost boyfriend fitting, often v-neck, and have an interesting twist that sets them apart from the dreaded sweater frump factor.

How was your weekend? I was more than ready for my two days of fun and relaxation, so on Friday I decided to get the weekend mentally started early with this outfit. Post Week Plans

Happy Friday! How was your week? Surprisingly, this week felt like it flew by, but not in the hassled "Oh I didn't get everything done kind of way!" More in a productive, surplus of energy, ready for a fun weekend kind of way.

I was informed early this week that the boy's football team has a bye this Sunday (shucks!) so I was open to plan a full itinerary of everything and anything I would like to do. Let's just say I "planned" about 1.2 trillion ideas, but now need to make a loose "schedule" so that I don't buzz around like an overhyped tornado right through Sunday.

Here are a few of my plans:

Picnic with Charlie on the river by the lounge chairs. I love that you can see the Empire State Building and have a real "Wow I'm in NYC" moment

A little bit of shopping! Specifically I would like some colored cords or jeans, and jewel toned sweaters. Due to an unfortunate leak in my old apartment I discovered many of my sweaters have a lovely stain front and center

Italian dinner

Test the new meatball shop

Go for a long run

Get my iPod fixed pre long run

Re-heel my boots, it's almost like getting new shoes!

Rain Practicality

When I woke up yesterday to the sound of pouring rain and gusts of wind I knew it was a day for layering. Sure, layering is in style and is incorporated most days, but this was a day for layering necessities. I had a day of running errands around midtown and the last thing you want is sludgy puddles getting inside your shoes, or dripping window water down your neckline.

This outfit of bright colors and water repelling fabrics is the perfect combination of practicality and fun. Although I do have a heavy duty traditional rain trench, I love getting away with this bright yellow slicker when I can. It seems reminiscent of a full yellow rain suit with matching hat and wellies! Speaking of which, these patent water proof boots were a completely random find at the Zappos outlet in Shelbyville, KY (a goldmine if you are even in the area with loads of extra patience).

Hello everyone! Did you have a great weekend?

I enjoyed a lovely three day weekend after working most of Saturday, however I was working at one of the biggest shopping extravaganzas I have ever experienced.

As I mentioned on Friday, I attended (and participated in!) the Gilt Warehouse Sale on Saturday. Since moving to New York, I have done my fair share of poking around sample sales and even the Barney's Warehouse Sale, but this was so much more civilized, and therefore in my opinion more efficient/ less overwhelming. Gilt Groupe sold $10 tickets through Gilt City New York.com, for a two hour shopping window. So rather than a hair pulling, elbow shoving, clothes ripping disaster, the room was never more that 3/4 full, and the line never made more than one wrap around the checkout desk. That's not to say there wasn't some serious fighting outside about spots in the waiting line! But, I suppose, what's a huge shopping event with loads of women without a little screaming?

Besides the lovely environment, there were also some beyond outrageous deals! I scored two dress deals for ~~$375~~ $59 and ~~$175~~ $29! For those looking for a bigger purchases there were large ticket designer jackets for ~~$10,000~~ $500 (yes that is four zeros on the first price!) Unlike the Barney's sale I was slightly underwhelmed by the shoe selection, but if you are a size 6 or 10.5 you may have had better luck.

Chic-spiration: Power Dressing

Ever since the Emmy awards a few weeks ago, when fire engine red dresses took over the crimson carpet, I've had my eyes peeled for more pieces of the power color. It is pretty amazing when you start paying attention. I've recently been seeing plenty of red on ladies about town, and not only are you drawn to the color, but to the person who is wearing the attention grabbing shade.

This image by Tommy Ton takes the trend to the max. Not only is this the exact shade of rich red, but the head to toe look seems to multiply the drama.

**The last time I recall this look being popular would be the two piece power suits on working women of the 80s...I would consider this a HUGE improvement, agree?!

Marc Jacobs is getting bravos around the world for the beautiful collection he sent out for Louis Vuitton in Paris, and on a carousel no less! The entire collection is lady like and frothy, like the whipped cotton candy one would expect when paired with a carnival ride.
As I gawked at the photos this morning, my eyes darted toward the model's feet: sky high pointed mules in a variety of sorbet colors. They are so fresh, beautiful, and completely different from anything I have seen in recent memory. Do you love them?

The Interest is in the Texture

Ever since I graduated college and moved out on my own, I have become a huge fan of HGTV. A cozy Sunday afternoon with House Hunters or Color Splash can lull me into a peaceful state like nothing else. While I love the outlandish combinations of the Antonio Treatment, I've actually learned a lot of design tips and tricks from the genius Candice Olson of Candice Tells All.

During my latest viewing, Candice was making over the master bedroom of a couple with young children. She coated the entire suite in a muted palette of dove grey, ivory, and white, normally the polar opposite of my taste. However, she repeatedly said, the key to interest in a neutral palette is playing with texture. When you pile knits, silks, and sheers, suddenly the wash of white seems more intriguing than blah.

Yesterday, I entered a very crisp fall day in my own neutral layers of texture. I think the touches of bling and layers of cotton, corduroy and chunky knits makes it far more interesting than grey.

Happy Monday everyone, did you have a great weekend? Hopefully you got a taste of fall weather for the first time as we did here in the city. I dove into my closet to pull out my most comfortable boots and cropped jacket for a weekend of visitors and football.

If you're anything like me, while I love perusing the newest coats, colored jeans, and blouses for the season, nothing gets me as giddy as hunting out the season's newest shoes. Especially in a cool season like fall, when you will eventually be covered up from knee to chin, shoes are where you can go totally wild and express yourself outside of a warm parka. People debate over why women have such a shoe obsession, and I would blame it on everything from your feet will rarely have a fat day, to the confidence boost brought upon by an extra two inches of height. In any case, I rounded up my favorite pairs available this fall in three (plus a wild card) of fall's trendiest categories. Which look are you planning to try?

Jewel Tone Heels: I love wearing staggering, chunky heels with opaque tights and short skirts in the fall and winter. These rich saturated pairs will brighten up any black or grey ensemble, or coordinate perfectly with a jewel hued outift.

We made it to Friday and it feels soo good!
My sister was in town for a few days this week and we were able to meet up after her classes for a quick drink and chat. She was here with her graduate school class, so it was pretty fun to see people several years older than me reliving an experience very similar to college- it made me feel so mature! A nice contrast? The boy's college roommate is en route to the city right now, which will surely make for a very immature next few days.

I found this picture from Tommy Ton's Fashion Week photos and it perfectly captures this mature/immature, up/down, classic/ distressed juxtaposition. Plus I love that the coloring of the heels resembles old 90's high tops! Doesn't it look like a great way to feel very comfortable and very stylish this weekend? Artful Nail Trends

My hair dryer has been broken for a week, thus leaving me to air drying and some help from the curling iron. But that doesn't mean I've completely let any attempt at appearing pulled together fall by the wayside. One of my easiest tricks for not appearing one pair of mismatched shoes away from losing it, is a quick mani- pedi. I've mentioned before, it is seriously a great perk to living in this city that this luxury can be found for less than lunch (the mani at least). I officially took my nails into autumn territory during this first week of the season with Pamplona Purple, a fun shade that mixes plum and magenta.

However, I'm becoming increasingly intrigued by the modest to outrageous nail art I've been seeing. During high school, inch long acrylic nails were a regular occurrence, and the glitter stripped, white tips are etched in my mind as the epitome of cheap (border line gross) beauty trends.

Thankfully, I'm now seeing everything from herringbone checks to the new magnetic nail polish on short (hygenic) real nails. I haven't yet done anything more exciting than a glitter top coat, but am anxious to try a fun pattern. Have you sported any nail art?

I think we all agree, that next to the runways, watching street style during fashion week is just as inspiring. When I attended the J.Crew presentation I saw several ladies wearing these taffeta printed pants from the line. My mind has since been preoccupied spotting printed skinny pants on women around the city.

The Sartorialist caught this lovely lady wearing her printed trousers, and I love her more casual approach to the trend. Her loose fit trousers make the look a little bit slouchier and very relaxed, so I imagine this was near the end of the Fashion Week race.

Any of the below pieces from here or here can help set the base for a similar look, skinny or slouchy. However, if I try it out this weekend it will have to be with a pair of rain galoshes!

Basics with a Twist: Lands' End Canvas

Last month I was flipping through my new magazines, and mentioned my shock at finding that this quirky shirt was from Lands' End Canvas. I now feel that I should apologize for my lack of research, and fill you in on the massive steps that this classic brand has taken in becoming more contemporary and appealing to the stylish set.

My grandparents are loyal clientele of Lands' End thanks to their affinity for khaki pants, polo shirts, and cable knit crew neck sweaters. Therefore, it was never a brand that I felt aligned with my own style. However, I've done some more poking around and found that "Canvas" takes the classic American style the brand is known for and elevates it for the modern girl- camper or not! Their pieces are classic shapes in a variety of colors with a slight twist. For example: the staple equestrian boot paired with slim laces, or the utility jacket every fashion girl is jumping for paired with a moto collar.

While not shockingly trendy, these are the basics that will seamlessly mix with your piece of the moment for a funky, unique look at a very fair price.

Red Carpet Trend Tip

Did you settle into something cozy and watch the Emmy Awards on Sunday night? Frankly I prefer the red carpet and post show recaps to the actual ceremony, so once the awards started my apartment flipped between the Emmy's and Eagles (the art of compromise.)

I think overall the night's gowns were really beautiful! Surprisingly I didn't spot an out of this world ballgown reminiscent of Olivia Wilde's chocolate frothy frock. Instead everyone seemed to be standing tall in body skimming silhouettes that focused on fit, details, and bold color. I loved the evening's black gowns with lace, sparkle, and cutout details, despite the flack Gwenyth seems to be catching. Her lace detailing and high neck were quite demure other than the sheer stomach panel, and Emily Blunt looked fabulous in her fuller black/navy strapped gown.

However, my favorite trend of the night was the fire engine red! Red creates such power, energy, and instant glamour. Plenty of people can pull off dark red or crimson, but the real deal takes guts that these women mustered.

Although Sofia and Sarah definitely veered into coral territory, I thought they both look glamorous. Sarah collaborated with Christian Siriano on her custom gown and I love that it looked red carpet appropriate, but still young and playful.

For fall, I plan to add a little red carpet glamour to the every day by adding fire engine punch to my wardrobe. My favorite pairings are red with purple, marigold, or variations on caramel and taupe. Anything but black which always manages to look like a news anchor (seriously!)

On Tuesday as I headed into Lincoln Center, the lovely ladies from DNA Info.com asked to chat with me about my skirt. While I was aiming for comfortable edginess at 9am, these ladies said it was quite short, tight, and a bit sexy? Apparently it was working for me!

Has anything caught your eye during the shows this week? I am thrilled by the bright citrus hues and feminine silhouettes at Nanette Lepore as well as the strategic leather details at Proenza Schouler. I just love this time of year!

Unexpected Prep Pairings

Yesterday I hopped out of bed with an extra perk in my step, and headed toward Lincoln Center for the J.Crew runway presentation. Being a presentation style show, girls and guys stood on a platform while everyone mingled, chatted, and gawked at their looks.

Just as one would hope, Jenna Lyons did not disappoint in her presentation of unexpected pairings with simple transitional pieces, and a few standout sequined separates. J.Crew has elevated itself above its previous competition by the sheer ability to make the unexpected seem perfectly wearable. Case in point: Leopard shoes as a neutral base. At least 50% of the female looks were paired with a leopard pump or loafer. Everything from a pink and orange skirt and sweater to a bright yellow shorts ensemble looked quirky yet everyday appropriate with the spotted shoe. Also creating a brand specific look was the J.Crew signature orange-red lipstick. Every girl sported the shade and it was completely flattering on the darkest to lightest skin tones, red haired through jet black. Very exciting is the fact that my favorite color pairing: hot pink and tangerine, is a recurring theme for spring. The looks ranged from crisp white, to marigold and red, cerulean and kelly green, right through to navy and white eyelet offering plenty of colorful options.

It was a very relaxed and enjoyable show both for the looks and the atmosphere. The fashion industry’s power players pleasantly intermingled at the very early hour of 9:30am. Robbie Myers looked pulled together in a sleeveless black ensemble that appeared to have leather details, and high strapped Louboutins. Joe Zee solidified the color pairing of fall with his outfit of navy and black. Jenna Lyons cheerfully appeared tired and satisfied with the presentation. Lyons wore geek chic glasses as her main accessory, and greeted everyone who approached with a peck on the cheek and genuine enthusiasm.

Also, a peek into fall trends at a spring show: printed pants. Several audience members wore J.Crew's rose patterned ankle pants with everything from chambray button blouses to striped tees. It is exciting to see all levels of the fashion community embrace an attainable brand for pushing current fashion understanding and creating interest in everyday pieces. Plus, everyone was so refreshingly relaxed at this early and cheerful show!

A Bold New Vibe

Too often when an actress, model, designer, chef, or celebrity of any sort leaps into a new industry, particularly into fashion, it results in a lackluster replication of their latest red carpet highlights. So when I heard that interior design icon Kelly Wearstler was launching a clothing line, I held my breath. Like Rachel Zoe she took her line directly to the big leagues with Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Holt Renfrew. Perhaps this raises the stakes even higher in that I do not imagine these shoppers would entertain a celebrity’s latest passion project with a hefty price tag.

However, when I saw her designs today I was beyond pleasantly surprised. In her second season, each piece is just as splashy, bold, and perfectly juxtaposed as every room Kelly washes with her signature style. The numerous patterns are mirrored reflections of her wallpaper and upholstery patterns, yet seem perfectly proportioned for each glamorous, wearable look.

The below rose leather jacket and geometric print mini skirt are the kind of items I would love to pull out of my closet every single day.

New York Fashion Week Kick Off

Did you venture out into the festivities of Fashion's Night Out last night? I love the idea of this night, but it can be pretty overwhelming since it seems EVERY store in EVERY part of the city is hosting a special soiree. Yesterday I actually made a plan (rare for me) of which spots I wanted to visit, and it made the night much more enjoyable.

The first stop was Treasure & Bond. I am a huge Nordstrom fan, and this is their new concept store in NYC. Although it is absolutely nothing like a traditional Nordstrom store, they curated a very cool collection of jewelry and accessories with all profits going to charity. Although there are clothes upstairs, the accessories are definitely the stand out. And surprise- the funky eyewear from the guys at Proof have a great spot on the ground floor! Another fun find is on the back wall featuring the beautiful hats from the talented milliner Satya Twena. Right now the cubby holes feature her beautifully colored fedoras- I just hope they add some of her whimsical fascinators in time for spring!

Missioni was an off the list stop, but definitely worth it. They had a black and white photo booth (an instant crowd pleaser), plenty of champagne, and a super sweet staff. It was a great stop on the way to Rag & Bone. I added this to the list for the concert, and as a treat for the boy since Carmelo Anthony was supposed to be in attendance. Of course this meant a line half way down the block, which I'm just not into on my FNO. We breezed around a few more blocks soaking in the atmosphere, getting bombarded by balloons at Marni, and gawking at the Net-a-Porter "Window Shop." Just as we were heading home a very large man pushed me out of the way. None to pleased I glanced upward, and saw that behind this security figure was none other than Ms. Anna Wintour- a perfect finale to fashion's biggest night (and that bob really is impeccable in person!)

Too Good to Hide

Summer officially ended on Monday, which means all of our summery pieces can be packed away right? Frankly no. I am limited on storage space and love some pieces too much to hide them away for six months. I do shun to the back of the closet light weight sundresses, skirts and anything linen that floats in a summer breeze, it seems silly when your top half is shivering in a parka. However, items with a little more ‘heft’ can do double duty like a heavy cotton skirt that is completely appropriate with heavy knits and boots. (I find tanks and tees seasonally androgynous thanks to their layering talents.)

This dress is one of those that I hope to relegate to cross-seasonal dressing. The spaghetti straps could be a test, but I didn’t get it to wear it nearly enough to already put it away.

My parents bought my mom, sister, and I the same dress in different colors during a trip to Paris. It has a great ‘twirl’ factor, deep geometric pockets, and perfectly toes the line between flirty and just-for-fun. (Now I just need one of them to give up their version so I can rotate mine by my mood.)

A number of times throughout this summer I've discussed my hunt for a great new pair of sunglasses, (even spotting them and debating hunting down a stranger!) Well, hold your breath, because the perfect shades were spotted and purchased two weeks ago, just in time for the grand finale of summer: Labor Day.

I spotted my new glasses at Urban Outfitters (similar to these, but with an elongated frame.) They are the perfect blend of exaggerated frame size with cat eye flair, and a offer a inconspicuous nod to old Hollywood glamour.

Magical Recap

As promised on Monday, I want to share some more details about the fashion trends, innovations (and oddities) I discovered while in Las Vegas pre-hurricane. I spent an exhausting four days in Las Vegas working and exploring the Magic Trade Shows, POOL and PROJECT. POOL is described as the art and design show featuring innovative and emerging designers. While I love this description, it doesn’t ring entirely true and unfortunately some truly innovative designers felt this discrepancy. The show is a place for lower priced and “fast fashion” pieces including retro swim wear, coin purses, loads of t-shirts, and some funky socks, most wholesaling for under $75. While it is still fun to explore, I wish they more appropriately titled the space for the sake of truly emerging designers, with a high price point, spending hard earned money, and being misplaced.

The larger show of the week is PROJECT (which does feature Workroom, an innovative designer space *It took me nearly 3 days to figure out what all of the shows featured, without even getting to the second location!) There is an air wall between the two shows letting you wander between seamlessly and get lost among the designers and buyers. This was my first trade show, and honestly the first day was pretty overwhelming. It is a long day of standing, networking, and talking. However, by day two I was getting into the swing of things, and the experience was an exciting and inspiring look at what is coming next in terms of fashion trends, here’s what I snooped out:

-Gentlemanly Menswear: Chivalry is not dead, and neither is the trend of men looking like gentleman. While I foresee “geek chic” becoming less geek and more refined, the idea of tailored, masculine apparel for men seems to holding ground. Fine print collared shirts, retro cut jackets, lace up shoes, and wonderfully soft sweaters that you will be dying to steal were featured in an installation by menswear expert Nick Wooster. (I also heard him mention cashmere pants which sound AMAZING, but I didn't see them hanging from the swinging ropes. Yes it was a very cool way to ogle gingham checked shirts.)

-Meaningful Difference is a Lasting Trend: Both POOL and Project featured designers getting innovative in terms of materials, recycling, and sourcing their products to the benefit of another community. The popular shoe brand, TOMS, had an amazing large booth featuring a gazillion variations on their canvas slip-ons. I spoke with one half of the duo behind Mushmina, an accessories line developed after one sister’s life changing turn in the Peace Corps Morocco. They now employ over 75 local artisans to produce their exotic fabric bags, jewelry, and other accessories. One of the most unique, complex, and entirely handmade textiles at the show was Marla Cielo. The handbags, which are woven leather, hand painted murals continue to garner attention for the sheer complexity and beauty of a textile before it even becomes a product. It is a complexity and art that seems to be lost in many of today’s “fast fashion” brands.

Another booth that caught my eye had great energy, and one of the most absurdly cool products I’ve ever seen. Proof Eyewear produces handmade sustainable wood sunglasses. They come in a variety of wood types and finishes, and are polished to an almost matte, completely smooth finish. Also cool in the tree-born category (who knew?); wooden ties created in slates with an elastic loop for the neck and down the tie for movement: geek-chic, and brilliantly thought out.

-Denim, Jeans, Jeans, Denim: They aren’t going anywhere but keep changing. I spotted a booth of silk denim

-Long, Soft and Comfortable: Although maxi skirts seem to float in and out of fashion, the trend of comfortable light layering, including maxi skirts and dresses, seems to have longevity. I love the versatile cuts that showed up including dresses as light as a slip, asymmetrical cardigans, and tanks that screamed to be worn in twos (or threes!)

-Statement Makers: Now is not the time to blend in and a variety of vendors are making it easy. Chunky jewelry from the likes of Noir and Alexis Bittar continue to emphasize the more is more philosophy. Stacked heels, fascinator-esque barrettes, and a kaleidoscopic of colors from jewel tone to neon will coax you out of an lingering wallflower ways.

-Fashion with Compassion: This was one of my favorite finds of the week (and a hopefully endless trend). People so often argue that fashion with a purpose will never be truly accepted in this rather exclusive club. Brands like TOMS have definitely put a dent in this argument, and there are many others making a name for themselves with equally admirable missions. Falling Whistles has received amazing press, and deservedly so. I met the unbelievably passionate man behind the mission, Sean Carasso, and his enthusiasm is contagious. Not only is it a great cause, but the whistle necklaces are slightly industrial, simple, and come in a variety of finishes. A seemingly straightforward, but unfortunately under utilized recipe for success in retail.

The new president of Project, Andrew Pollard, wrote a great intro in the Project directory about the future he sees for fashion, including longevity for brands that plan with a purpose beyond a quick sale or flash trend. It is an inspiring and exciting look into this addictive industry!

End Surprise

There are certain stores that I tend to stay away from due to either actual or psychological barriers. This category includes several stores that focus on khaki shorts and polo shirts, catering wonderfully to a fashion set other than myself. Therefore I was more than surprised when the below item caught my eye in a well known fashion magazine's September issue.

I have been hunting down a great chambray shirt that is fitted, but not ruffled, pin tucked, or exorbitantly priced since it's a little outside my normal style (I have a documented issue with button down shirts.) I love the delicate polka dots and although this pick is surprisingly from Land's End, I think it fits the bill.

Project Hurricane

Wow, what a weekend! Last Saturday I took off for Las Vegas to work POOL Trade Show 2011. It was an amazing, overwhelming, inspiring, and energetic show filled with far more (75,000 attendees!) than I expected. There are so many innovative brands on the horizon that I feel are leading fashion in a exciting direction about far more than just clothes.

Of course, an earthquake early in the week caused quite a stir on the east coast, and was only a sneak peek of what was to come once I returned home. A stormy and windy weekend left plenty of time for lounging and recovering from a tiring week. New York really lucked out in terms of storm damage with slight flooding and scattered trees down. My fingers are crossed for my sister in Williamsburg, VA where they were absolutely bombarded for several hours and are still without power!

Stepping Out in Sneakers

I'll admit, I received these Bensimon high tops as a present for my birthday....in May, and had yet to wear them! I hunted them down after seeing them in a very eclectic outfit spread in InStyle (styled for brunch). As soon as they arrived I wore them around the house, but couldn't figure out how to actually mix them into an ensemble.

I strongly believe, and think most people know, that what you wear can totally alter your outlook for the day. While it is easy to brood all day in black and grey when you are feeling less than awesome, piling on something bright and colorful is often a more productive stance.

Last week I wasn't feeling bad, or awesome, and decided to take a colorful step in the direction of boosting my mood. My sister and I both bought this exact same dress several years ago. Luckily the linen fabric is nearly indestructible and I have yet to wear it out. Paired with a bright beaded bib and a fresh coat of Fiercely Fiona, I managed to stride out the door feeling one step closer to awesome.

Last Wednesday I skipped out of work a bit early and took the quickie flight to Boston to join my family for a last minute family vacation. With two siblings going back to school and the craziness of all of our current schedules, our normal summer visits seemed to keep getting pushed back. Hence, Mommy Matriarch took the reins and booked everyone a ticket north. We drove the ~~1 hour~~ two and a half hours to just outside of Ogunquit, Maine.

An interesting aspect of my family is that we were all born in different states. Therefore while some thought they were returning to their native region, others felt like a Floridian reptile ready to shrivel up and freeze. In any case, Maine is one of those places where the culture permeates every facet of your visit from copious amounts of lobster rolls and clam chowder, to quaint towns and a very near desire to purchase seersucker (but I completely resisted.) I spent four days in jean shorts and a rotation of t-shirts and sweatshirts that I alternated in spilling butter on or getting sandy.

The quick visit was totally worth it to bid everyone adieu before another school year, and share some embarrassing new stories that only a family should know.

Summer Makeunder

As my September issues have started piling into my inbox (joy!!) each one is offering tips and tricks for transferring your beauty routine from summery and humidity proof to warmly fall appropriate. Seeing as it is still way to close to triple digits to think about fall, I'm sticking with my less is more summer routine, and marking pages for later reference.

I am not one to pile on a lot of product in any season, mostly because of my obscenely sensitive skin (and the fact that when it's warm, huge sunglasses can be your best concealer.) However, in the summer I get the urge to make anything I do put on bright and full of punch. Lining my eyes with these super soft and pigmented Sephora eye pencils and then piling on Falsies mascara creates an attention grabbing eye with little need for anything else. Otherwise I will sometimes try a post-popsicle look with a berry lip stain and glittery gloss. These Wet & Wild Natural Lip Colors offer a nice tingle of moisture as well as a fun dose of color.

One thing I never skimp on is a good under eye concealer (thanks mom), and a rotation of bright nail polishes. Lately I've been using this ultra creamy Covergirl version for the former, but it tends to get a little gloppy in the heat, any suggestions?

Denim and Jewels

Happy Friday! The sun is shining to hopefully kick off a beautiful weekend in NYC. Further adding to my chipper mood; I can hardly wait until tomorrow around 9am when my silent treatment will be lifted. For the last three weekends I have been under fairly strict, unspoken orders to remain silent or leave the apartment as my roommate is studying for GMAT. Today we will both be working from home, and since I have a fair amount of work, it could be productive for me to keep my mouth shut for 8 hours... but we will see how that ambitious plan goes.

Whether or not your are working, playing, or chattering away, nothing screams "ready for the weekend" like gems...lots of them. I used to wear this tunic with peg leg pants for the office, which means it rarely gets worn in hot weather. But I love it, and how the bejeweled neckline leaves all of the adornment for the arms. I was cautious in pairing it with cutoff denim (my uniform bottom for the last two weeks) as it could mean a sans pants look, not something I try. Thankfully it hit the perfect length between the frayed hem of my shorts, creating a balance of chic end-of-week playfulness.

The moon boot platforms are just the icing on the cake. They shoot a fun glittering glare any time they are out in the sun and are surprisingly comfortable. The only downside is that when you walk there is something off in the space of the arch, creating an air bubble, which makes a fairly odd sound every few steps. I'll leave that to your imagination...but if you hunt out a pair only wear them with people you are comfortable around, or when standing still!

The Hottest Party in Town

If you have been stumbling around the style blogs anytime recently you probably noticed that the hottest shindig in town right now, is hanging around your wrist- in huge piles. The "arm party", or "arm partay" is popping up everywhere, complete with tie tassels and stray strings of friendship bracelet glory (is anyone else having a middle school flash back??)
I have to admit I do love the crazy pops of color, and casual juxtaposition this creates for most any outfit. Mixed in with contrasting bangles or chain makes an extra addictive and utterly confusing pile. The most popular go-to brand for the look that I've been noting is Dannijo. A quick click around their site (ok, aim for quick, I dare you...) shows a glorified version of old woven arm candy, mixed with funky stones, chunky hardware, and every color under the sun.

This whole trend is tempting me to dive back into the old embroidery floss box and whip out a mega block party. My sister and I would sit for hours creating fairly elaborate bracelets and gifting them to everyone from our Mom to an uber masculine uncle who would kindly let us tie it to his wrist (albeit I'm guessing it was temporary.)

Seasonal Trends to Try

Last weekend I did something I try to do about once a year, and then try my very hardest to make it last. I pulled everything out of my closet and sorted it into categories: jackets and skirts up top, dresses and tops on the bottom rung. I don't get overly ambitious with color and fabric coordination, just enough organization to stimulate the senses. Since the overhaul I have pulled out a different combination of pieces each day that I never considered putting together, probably because I couldn't see them at the same time!
Now with a fresh canvas in front of me, I also realized I have about one month to try all of the funky, fearless trends this summer season presented. Here are some I'm daring myself to give a whirl before the leaves start to fall...

Packing a punch with a super bright hue is one of my favorite perks of summer, but I've yet to find a serious neon piece that packs wearable pizazz.

Mixing it up with various patterns doesn't have to disappear when autumn rolls in, but I love the whimsy factor of checks and stripes in light, fluttery fabrics.

Fake a yacht party: Even if you weren't in the Hamptons last weekend, there are plenty of nautical stripes and rattan to fake it for an afternoon.

Crop tops and high waists: Both of these shapes require a little bit of gumption to show off, but when paired together they seem to cancel each other in terms of intimidation. I love high waist pants, but have yet to try it in a shorter version.

Play with volume, whether it's a full maxi or a poufy little mini, now is the perfect season to try it out.

White out: As much as we love to bend the rules, an all white ensemble just screams summer.

Put on your fancy pants (or shoes!) As the countdown is on, you are running out of time to rock your fanciest baubles, shoes, or flouncy skirt. I love the idea of wearing your fancy pieces for a lower key outing, it's the fashion definition of living in the moment!

Rock a SERIOUS hat: We all dabble in the land of floppy brims or fedoras, but why not rock a serious statement piece (for some inspiration just out this lady, she is doing an astounding trunk show at Henri Bendel this week).

Wild Card: Confession time, I wore two hot pink hair extensions in my hair for the better part of a year, and I'm itching to try it again! Did you see Lauren Conrad's ombre tie dye for some inspiration?

Chic-spiration: Cut it out

We haven't had a Chic-spiration segment for a few weeks, but this week while perusing through InStyle, I found a completely worthwhile candidate.

In certain areas of fashion, and life in general, things sound much better than they are in reality (chocolate coffee beans = delicious and jittery). One such instance is "cutouts" in fashion. The term sounds edgy, sexy, and perfectly cool for summer. But often this style becomes cheapened with over exposure,unflattering placement, and cheaply sewn and cut fabric.

Thankfully, Carey Mulligan rocked a beautifully draped cutout ensemble by Roksanda Ilincic . The draping makes the cutouts more whimsical than in your face, and the color blocking frames the eclectic vibe of the triangular skin panels.

This look reaffirms my belief (and hope!) that this trend is wearable without being trashy. This and this could also be great ways to test the trend.

For the Love of Polka Dots

Stripes seem to have a steady stream of fashionable fans, but polka dots do not get near the fan fare. My mom sent me this skirt (yes she's awesome), and although it's technically "polka squares" I can't get enough of it. If you follow me on twitter you likely heard me questioning my choice to wear it twice in three days, but it really is incredibly versatile!

First I wore the newbie for date night, and realized I had a very patriotic red, white and blue theme. The breezy top and light cotton skirt were great for the stifling heat wave.

All summer (and the better part of last spring) I have been looking for the perfect (obviously an impossibly challenge) pair of cat-eye sunglasses. Nothing black, or overly Betty Boop retro, but also clearly different from my standard oversized, "Yes I could be a celebrity," sunnies.

Waiting at a crosswalk last week a woman stood next to me in the perfect pair. However, it was 8:45, I was clearly not caffeinated, and I said nothing.

Lately, I have been pondering, when is it polite and flattering vs. rude and annoying to compliment someone and ask where they purchased something amazing? Personally, I love when a fellow female style stunner says my dress is fantastic and inquires about it. Of course, this is completely separate from an oddball complimenting your shoes while eyebrow flirting.

I normally feel waiting in line, parties, and miscellaneous time killing situations are perfectly acceptable for striking up the conversation. I also feel it should be sincere- you really have never seen those sandals and love them!

Bamm-Bamm Thursday

Happy Monday everyone! Hopefully you had a relaxing, or at least enjoyable weekend. Sometime yesterday the heatwave that completely coated NYC last week broke and everyone seems to be in a better mood this morning as a result.

On Thursday last week my work team and I cabbed it to the Upper East Side to check out the Alexander McQueen exhibit, "Savage Beauty" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, before it closes next month. I had heard nothing other than outrageously rave reviews, so my expectations were pretty high. Luckily we made it early enough that we only had to wait 20 minutes. However, I would still recommend to the numerous volunteers that they let half as many attendees in at a time. The exhibit became so overwhelmingly crowded that you can't possibly read all of the descriptions and chilling quotes. Despite the pushing and shoving, it really is a beautiful exhibit. McQueen was obviously battling mind-aleting demons, but his battle is a lasting legacy for us to enjoy. One of my favorite aspects was the very first room featuring strikingly bare jackets that highlight his talent for cut, draping, and understanding the body. This first showing makes all of the more elaborate gowns, suits, and costumes more impressive. The Tracy Reese headpieces that accompanied many of the looks were equally extraordinary and complimentary.

The exhibit was also an excellent way to escape the heat for an hour. I wore this dress that the boy so kindly always says make me resemble the Flintstone child, Bamm-Bamm. Despite this description, I love the dress' comfort and how swapping out the belt makes it extremely versatile. Plus, when it's way to hot to layer, I love to pile on the baubles.

The Tribal Test

I’m all for trend experimentation in my wardrobe, but I like to try it out on the inexpensive side before/if I consider a big ticket item. It helps to justify my sometimes erratic fashion thinking. Furthermore, I want to make sure the new item somewhat fits into my wardrobe. There is zero hope for justifying a glorious yet slightly crazy purchase if I have nothing to pair it with.

Enter the bold colorful tribal prints I have been drooling over. I adore colorful chevron stripes, edgy ikat prints, and anything in between featuring an unusual smattering of color, texture, and attention grabbing assets. I saw these shorts during a quick run through Forever 21 and knew that they were the perfect opportunity to try out the look. Similar to the maxi skirt featured here, these have less fabric, more color, and absolutely added a skip to my step for most of the day.

I have already discussed my enthusiasm for both glasses brand Warby Parker and the eclectic designs of designer duo Suno. A glasses wearer for over 10 years, I am fully supportive of anyone trying to up the style and lower the price of prescription glasses. Despite this entirely honorable endeavor, Warby Parker takes it a step further by promising one pair of glasses to a child in need for each pair purchased.

Enter the similarly philanthropic, though in less direct means, Suno. The amazing Kenyan textile prints and unique shapes of Suno designs have quickly gained attraction among fashion followers and exclusive retailers. The story behind the line is equally inspiring: Max Osterweis collected Kenyan textiles for years. After post-election violence threatened to ruin the Kenyan economy in 2009, Osterweis launched Suno with designer Erin Beatty, and maintains much of the production in Kenya and other developing nations.

Suno's amazing and vibrant Resort 2011

In the Spring/ Summer 2011 Suno show (which I still regularly seek out for inspiration, though Resort 2011 is gaining traction) Suno incorporated Warby Parker glasses. Obviously a feel good and stylish match made in heaven, the two brands have now partnered for a full blown collaboration. The Kenyan inspired prints of Suno will be used by Warby Parker for three limited edition pair of sunglasses. The one-for-one WP mission will still apply, and the designer shades will retail for only slightly above the WP standard for $175. I checked out the site today and there is a place to sign up for an exclusive preview of the collaboration when it is released next month. A full collection of regularly priced WP sunglasses will also be released in August.

I love this collaboration, and both of these brands individually for so many reasons. The uplifting and effective mission of each, and the proof that truly unique, vibrant, and inspirational fashion brands can succeed is inspirational and, for me, a trend in itself.

Today's the Day

Last time I posted (eeks) I was happily frolicking between post-vacation and return to reality with a side of redecorating and maxi skirts. Then reality kicked in and I was smacked with an a$$-kicker of an illness, and down for the count. Most likely I picked it up on my planes, trains, and automobiles traveling. In any case, I eventually made it out of bed..on Tuesday. The rest of the week was a wake up, go to work, nap, eat, go to bed routine that consisted of comfy as pajamas cut-offs, a cold sweat repelling tank and easy slip on sandals.

Luckily this week I awoke actually feeling alive and well on my way to a full mend. This of course means I have energy to dress beyond last weeks uniform. I'm using this image from Style.com as the perfect energy boosting summer inspiration.

In House Makeover

When you are young and making a nest of your own, we are all faced with the same dilemma. I never like to spend money on something I don't truly like (or hopefully love!) including furniture. However, when you are faced with a large empty space, and nothing but a bed, you simply have to make do.

In my last apartment I had an empty space that needed to hold the TV, books, and miscellaneous other necessities. With the cash available I did what any newbie city homemaker would do: head to Ikea. I found a great shelf that was highly functional, could be added to in the future, and fit the bill perfectly. I was aiming to pick up a deep brown color, however the Ikea selection shelf won this battle. It wasn't until I drove back to the city and hauled the two boxes up four flights of stairs that I realized it was in fact "Natural Pine", or classic Ikea Khaki.

I made do for several months in my last apartment, however when I reached my current abode it simply wasn't going to work. Between the bar, dark fireplace, and interesting architecture, Ikea Khaki stuck out like an ugly step child. In my attempt to meander between vacation and full work mode, I turned up my iPod and set about on an in house makeover.

I used this Martha Stewart paint straight from the jar. I first applied in long strokes with a sponge to cover the surface, then went over the whole area repeatedly with a "sponging" technique to get interesting smudges, bumps, and texture.

Once I reloaded the shelves, Ikea Khaki is simply a memory and this piece fits in perfectly with the rest of the room. The entire redo cost about $7.00 and 2 hours-success!

Urban Tribe

Yesterday I hit the city head on upon my return from vacation, and tried my best to dress the part. Unfortunately, unlike the toddler next door, we can't all get away with a wardrobe of only Pampers during a heatwave. However, this full, breezy maxi skirt is almost as cool!

The bold tribal print, mixed with a smattering of sequins and bangles perfectly captured my mental complex of "I mean business" and "Let's pretend it's still vacation."

I purchased this skirt about five years ago, and although I love it, it makes an appearance normally once a year. Even for a bold dresser, it packs a punch, requiring some practical planning, I almost back flipped down my front stairs when I stepped on the hem!

In the Veneto

I am currently re acclimating to reality following a beautiful week in the Veneto (the countryside of Italy about an hour and a half outside of Venice) followed by a long fourth of July weekend. This vacation was more than due and I could not wait to settle onto the plane, pass out (I'm border line narcoleptic in any moving object) and then turn off the computer and cell phone for a week.

The vacation did not start smoothly with a missed Parisian connection and therefore an overnight 9 hour train ride. This is not nearly as romantic as it sounds. However once we arrived we indulged in vino rose, Asiago cheese, pasta, bike riding, pool side lounging, and two days of wandering the canals and side streets of Venice.

I was pleasantly surprised by this ancient city. Before departing I was warned by multiple people that it was an overcrowded tourist trap that constantly smelled of musty buildings and mildew. However, once you left the main strip, it was a twisting maze of ancient buildings, beautiful glass jewelry, beads, gelato, and handcrafted Venetian masks. I highly recommend getting lost in this waterside labyrinth at some point in your travels!

Now I'm looking forward to perfecting some Italian recipes of my own. A week of fresh, simple, flavorful food makes the Thai takeout around the corner much less appealing.

Life Lessons Via the Bachelorette

I confess, this show sucks me in season after season. I think the boy put it best this evening, when he said regarding this season, "She just isn't that good of an actress to keep me entertained." Ha, the truth of reality TV in a nutshell. Either way, I found that in tonight's Thai boxing, lying, paddle rafting frenzy, there were some fairly obvious life lessons that we should all know.

Violence Solves Nothing: Cue the Thai boxing "date." I'm sure we have all had a bad date where you would love to throw a punch on the way to slamming the car door. Having multiple dates throw punches at each other in a foreign boxing ring with bloomers on, not hot or appropriate in any setting. Never mind the fact that Ames came off as a total tool last night- why did no one go with him to the Thai hospital while he was barely lucid? If I was him, that would have been my own personal wave out the door. Also, when she said, "This feels like a bad idea now..." It took fluorescent pink bloomers and a boxing round robin to make that clear?

Karma is a You-Know-What: Two on one dates are just that, two contestants and the bachelor/bachelorette. No matter how hard you want it to be a solo- it's not. Cue the William and Ben disaster scenario where one throws the other under the bus. First of all, why did she take this "online dating threat" so easily? She was forewarned of Bentley's misgivings pre-show and let that curly hair take her for a ride. Tonight post-raft trip a little tale of online dating gets your thrown off the island? Well luckily karma came rising , and the self-proclaimed "30 year old boy" followed his teammate off into the sunset. Note to men everywhere, nobody wants to date a squirming pre-pubescent teen in a 30 year old's body. Extra negative points when your career title is "Cell Phone Salesman", next round just put "sales."

Closure does not need to be in person: Bringing back old flames never bodes well for Bachelor/ Bachelorette contestants (oh man I just confessed to watching multiple seasons!) We see that Bentley is on cue for reprising his role as the bashful, charming, conniving, curly haired sir next week. Why do these contestants always feel the need for closure in person. He left and you have 12 more on deck, obviously the odds are in your favor. As the boy so eloquently put it, the best form of closure would be, "for them to replay the tape where Bentley repeatedly makes an a$$ out of her." Well put.

So there went an hour of my evening with Thai food and a heinous Thai boxing display. Did you get suckered in as well?

Sunday Funday in the City

Good morning friends- did you have a great weekend? It was gorgeous and warm in the city all weekend and the boy and I finally made some major strides in apartment organization (ex. get rid of Ikea coffee table, and hang wardrobe in the closet rather than the floor hint: girl's are not the only people messy with their clothes!)Yesterday I decided to enjoy the remaining sunshine of a Sunday afternoon, and try to clear some post-nap grogginess out of my head with a stroll around the new neighborhood.

Living in New York, I often swing between two extremes of fascination. Some days I completely forget the amazing and endless opportunities of the city and become overwhelmingly grumpy about the crazy price of a sandwich, over inflated egos of a jerk at the Apple store, and the 1 in 3 people you meet who claim to be a stylist when in reality they are unemployed and trying to justify a shopping issue. Other days I get giddy with pride that I am actually somewhat making it here, paying rent, working, and haven't been taken out by a homicidal taxi driver. In my groggy, fuzzy afternoon state I was hoping to regain some of the later excitement on a stroll with Charlie.

We started out wandering aimlessly and I found myself on one of the most gorgeous blocks I have discovered so far. It is Grove St directly before Hudson St, if you ever find yourself in New York. It is a block lined with semi attached town houses, ivy, peeking gardens, and actually winds on a curve like a suburban neighborhood. Now here is the real clincher to this mindless wandering...
I was on a straight away when I recognized a familiar face. I knew the face but was pretty sure I had never actually met the personality behind it. She was pushing a baby carriage and I was absolutely certain I knew the little cutie as well! It took about .25 seconds to realize it was the charming Joanna Goddard behind A Cup of Jo! I made awkward eye contact and she smiled at Charlie as I tried to prevent him from lunging into Toby's carriage. I am so embarrassed to say that I was slightly starstruck and didn't say anything to her.

I think Joanna is such a great inspiration and mentor for aspiring writers, journalists, or fashion enthusiasts. And they both really were as adorable as they seem in their daily posts.

I came back to the apartment giddy with my celeb encounter, and post dinner convinced the boy to a weekend finale at Tasti Delight. Walking over we saw a girl stop dead in her tracks and excitedly explain who just walked by to her boyfriend. Of course the boy and I quickened with Charlie in tow to see who it was. Oddly enough he stopped into the Tasti Delight! I held Charlie outside while the boy went inside to get our yumminess, now just wait until you follow this discussion:

Tasti D man: Hey we haven't seen you for a while.
"Celeb" (You will understand the quotes shortly): Yeah I know I've been on a TV show
Tasti D man: Oh?
Family inside: Looking inquisitively...
"Celeb": Yeah I'm on the bachelorette, I have a one on one next week (totally proud of himself, note to sir, that date actually took place about 6 months ago.)
Family: Oh we don't watch.
The boy: Watching while trying to be dismissive and not get spray tanned by contact or stabbed with insanely spiky hair.
Family: Good luck with it.

Either way this was one of the strangest and most entertaining "celeb" encounter and a great finish to the weekend. I apologize for the lack of posts, but I thought this random assortment of encounters and entertainment totally warranted a beginning of the week post.

I'm a big believer in how an outfit can drastically alter your mood. For instance, I always wear heels for important professional engagements simply for the additional confidence. So despite the fact that my eyes are red rimmed and a crease is forming across my nose from allergies, I decided to up my dress factor for a morning full of low key meetings. I put on this skirt that you may remember from waaaaay back when I did my first ever outfit post! Despite multiple layers of cotton it is incredibly cool and breezy.

However, I've developed a slight complex about this skirt. It has a great princess tutu factor, and I prance rather elegantly in it with heels, but I also get the majority of compliments on it from older women, i.e sitting on their stoop with a walker old. This is part of my issue with "midi" length skirts; they can easily seem frumpy if not worn with appropriate length tops, and roughed up accessories. But, I'm just going to think that these senior citizens appreciate the butterflies, and keep on twirling.

Mind you, by the end of these meetings I was beyond confused, frustrated, and borderline about to rip off part of this skirt, wear it Tarzan style and lose my cool on some people. Thank goodness for a strut/walk home during which to cool off!

Summer Concerts and Copious Amounts of Sunshine

It's Monday and I'm late posting...I'm blaming it on a weekend full of extra Vitamin D, a Central Park concert, and approximately 30 lbs of laundry that the man around the corner kindly folded and packed for me (sometimes I really love this city.)

This weekend started off strong with a Friday evening pre-dinner power nap. We always try to rest up on the weekend to start the week fresh, but have you ever thought how lovely it would be to have a rested weekend? To not fall asleep on a Friday evening date night as soon as you hit the door from dinner. It sounds counter productive, but I found that if you aren't over exerted and drained to the core, you actually relax rather than sleepily trying to relax.

Saturday, I went for sunny run on the East River. I realized how dreadfully out of cardio shape I was, but counteract that with the great color I got on my legs and I'll say I broke even.

So that brings us to my crowning point of the weekend- an outdoor concert of The Script in Central Park. I actually wasn't a huuge fan of the band, but they blew me away! Also, note to all- you will likely feel the oldest at any outdoor park. I think it has to do with the fact that the youngsters can't get into a bar venue, but at 24 I was trying really hard not to judge middle school behavior. After viewing all of the boho stylishness at Coachella via thousands of paparazzi shots I decided to give it a whirl. I wore some beat up brown leather heels, that also happen to be unbelievably comfortable, with a simple orange tank dress and well worn low slung leather belt. Loose wavy heart and this phenomenal clutch wrapped up what I know will be a heavily rotated summer ensemble.Good thing since I still need to find the camera!

A note on the dress. It is beyond comfortable and hugs in all the right places while feeling like a nightgown. But, let's just say Ms. Victoria's Secret will always emphasize certain assets, even in a "simple tank dress." I will definitely keep wearing it all summer, but perhaps not on a 45 minute subway ride where I have to use my clutch as a shield from far taller male riders.

So while middle school girls laying out on blankets whispered and poked with fringe and feathers in their hair, I think I nailed my blend of boho and girly. And wow, I have never been so thankful to be out of middle/highschool, were we all that catty?

There are some really exciting developments happening at work that are both tiresome and really thought provoking about the way fashion works. I'll be sharing more this week! How was your weekend? Truly stellar I hope!

In-House Alteration

I switched jobs and moved apartments within a few days of each other. In the process of packing I realized how many pieces of clothing I had accumulated for the "office" that I thankfully would not be needing again for a while (ever?) Unfortunately, I was in no position to do an in-store swap out and needed to come up with a plan to reuse these pieces rather than have them sit and waste precious closet space.

This weekend while the boy was out of town I turned my living room into an alterations studio. I pulled out two dresses that sat at that very appropriate but unflattering length between top of knee cap and widest point of thigh.

I ruled a straight line, chopped, pinned and ran each one through the sewing machine in a ~~straight~~ line. Two office appropriate shifts are now blank slate sundresses.

Next I took two skirts that I bought on clearance, but later learned hung dangerously low/ 90's rapper length low on my hips. I again pinned and ran through the machine.

In a matter of 40 minutes I had four reinvented pieces (and a crafty headband just for added effect.) You can check out the results in some upcoming outfit posts.

Clutter Collection

There seem to be two types of people: those who purge at every possible second to keep a minimal and simplified collection of necessities. And those who like stuff.

I definitely fall into the latter category. I am by no means a hoarder, and whole heartedly enjoy a good purge every now and then. When I was packing my apartment to move I purged four trash bags of clothes, shoes and bedding, and it felt phenomenal. However, in general I enjoy collecting stuff. I love printing photos from travels, my collection of shoes, statues that were gifted, and magazines that I have yet to tear apart. I blame it on a desire to be surround be "inspiration", and a total lack of "minimalist" taste in terms of design.

Unfortunately I also hate clutter. I admire and would love to pick the mind of fabulous designers who make piles of knick knacks look organized. Those talented owners who color co-ordinate their bookshelves and make stacks look artistic. If anyone has tips on this talent...please advise.

Cardboard, Couches and Clutches

What I intended to be a one week blogging hiatus turned into a two week and a day hiatus. I always forget the technological cave you are forced into when moving and the cable company has a 10 day wait.

In any case the last two weeks proved to be quite a monumental, but surprisingly smooth transition in my world. I moved apartments, moved in with the boy, moved jobs, and moved years (OK it was my birthday but I was on a "moving" roll).

Thanks to a trio of Eastern Europeans movers, the boy and I were each moved out and collaboratively packed into our new apartment in 2.5 hours! This is even more astounding when you consider that this same feat took me nearly 4 hours 9 months ago (and this one avoided the two weeks of muscular pain!) We've unpacked and organized at our respective rates (him instantaneously, me over a week) and are working to mash together my eclectic girly taste with his masculine less "make it work" aesthetic.

The job transition came quickly, but I am over the moon with excitement. I moved to New York two years ago bound and determined to work in the fashion industry- somehow, some way, some day. I've covered a variety of jobs working towards this goal, entering each one optimistic that it was a positive step in the right direction. This last job, which ended rather shortly was a gleeful leap of faith that took a rather unfortunate turn. However, everything happens for a reason... and thanks to a shortened work week I was able to intern for an incredibly talented young designer, and literally see the production of a fashion line from start to finish, nuts and bolts to social media strategy, sketches and seams to zippers and manicure destroying piles of tagging. And now an employee, I have never enjoyed work more.

So long story short, when my birthday came around I thankfully slept in (I was exhausted) and avoided my standard early 20's crisis. I am happy and motivated, at times confused and frustrated, but positive and excited for this next step. Hopefully you will enjoy this new view into our common fashion obsession! A Brief Break

Obviously things have been busy, seeing as I haven't updated since Monday eeeks! This week I am packing up to move over the weekend (yes again.) The boy and I are moving into an adorable new apartment, and then I am parking it for a while. Of course to make things extra busy I am also wrapping up one job and switching lanes...for which I can hardly contain my excitement.
So I think so as not to completely lose my marbles I am going to take a week off, plus the computer will likely end up buried beneath some boxes. In the mean time I have found some interesting fashion-y material to keep you inspired and buzzing for the next few days. And please cross your fingers for my packing karma!

Flattery vs. Knockoff

Last week I was jumping in and out of stores on my lunch break hunting out a little retail therapy. After Anthropologie, I jumped across the avenue into Zara, always a good standby for on-trend pieces with quirk, and a reasonable price.

Part of, as the Brits say, "high street fashion" is taking inspiration from the runway and bringing it to the masses. However, I think this season, Zara hit a little too close to the cutting room floor.

Wandering the ground floor I was oooohing over bold color blocked pieces in simple, stackable shapes...but it was slightly recognizable.

Miuccia Prada received beyond rave reviews for her collection of color blocked separates and dresses in bold, primary rainbow hues. Zara cranked out a very close replication of the looks from shape to color to stripe after stripe.

How close is too close for you? Sure, they aren't identical, but is it still too close to be a flattering nod to the designer, and more of a "copy"? I can still count the number of Kate Hudson's How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days gown knockoffs that walked through the door at my prom. But this time, I was turned off, and turned out the door empty handed.

Is it maturity and a growing genuine appreciation for a designer's work, or a selfish desire to avoid looking like a second rate copy? Maybe a little of both.

Marla Cielo @ Bond 07

Spandex and Sparkles in Water for Elephants

On Saturday night, the boy and I meandered into a gorgeous old movie theatre in the East Village to watch Water for Elephants. The trailer intrigued me, and I'm a huge Reese fan, but mostly it was the boy's choice.

While the movie was enjoyable, I'm a bit sensitive to violent movies (as in really hate them.) The boy recommends the novel over the movie, and seeing as I haven't read the book, but was not enamoured with the movie, I will agree. I'm still questioning the idea that Rosie the elephant instinctively knew, "Stab him with the stake by your left foot!" in Polish. But I am an "all ends well" kind of girl, so I left happy.

All movie reviews aside, the costumes completely stole the show. I was not familiar with the name Jacqueline West, costume designer before this movie, but she is fantastic. The slinky 1930's silk gowns were each slightly different, but all gorgeous and time appropriate.

I have a soft spot for feathers, sparkles, and a little flash. In fact my mom kindly let me dress as a Vegas showgirl for Halloween in elementary school(in a very PG rendition seeing as I had no idea about the actual meaning of "showgirl"), just to indulge my over-the-top glittering fantasies. Mesh your own vision of a glittering extravaganza with 1930s glamour, and you will find the intricately detailed performance leotards in Water for Elephants. Combined with Reese's platinum blonde pin curls and delicate dance flats, they took my breath away.

So while the movie was not jaw dropping, the sparkling leotards flipping over horses more than made up for it.

Top secret news: One day, in a past job, I was sitting behind a large glass desk when an interior design IDOL walked through the door. We sometimes had celebrities walk in, but since no one was flipping out today- I was totally caught off guard. Little did I know Kelly Wearstler was dropping into the building.

Interior design, art, and fashion often intersect, but rarely do you find someone who is truly talented in each genre. That is someone who can actually put together an impeccably designed and functional room, while reflecting personality, sophistication and pizazz in their own wardrobe. Kelly does.

Needless to say I was psyched to discover that Ms. Wearstler has a blog that covers her ventures in design, style, and two adorable sons. Her outfits are almost as inspiring as her interior work: colorful, funky, and reflective. Plus, you have to love a woman who flawlessly creates in bow tie heels. Tangerine Spring

I am a huge fan of every shade of pink, and it is my go to fashionable pick -me- up. Even though Elle was definitely onto something when she advised Cameron Diaz against the orange sweater at Fred Segal...this spring orange is having a moment.

I like true tangerine better than a rusty muted shade, especially in the summer when we all get a little sun-kissed glow. Orange and navy is a classic combination, and if you are truly daring I love orange with dandelion or a wild teal. This is definitely not for the faint of heart!

An Inspiring Day

Yesterday I had the unique experience of direct to consumer "sales." I put sales in quotes because frankly the part where I wrote down her credit card and ran the transaction freaked me out just a little. I didn't get a credit card until my 20s for this reason...
To take a step back, while at work a customer called regarding an order she wanted to place online. Really, she didn't want to discuss the order--she wanted to discuss color, style and what would best complement her existing wardrobe. I had never spoken to this woman until my boss handed me the phone at 4pm to deal with a website emergency.
Yet within 5 minutes I was talking her through what pattern would pair with her primary colors and neutral separates. Would style A hit right on her hip? Is B more pastel and would the teal clash with blue? We discussed our love of the "popping" hot pink (I tend to invent adjectives when I am enthused.)
All in all, I was at work until 7:30pm, and glanced at the clock once. I'm pretty sure this has happened--never. I felt like I had actually had an impact on this woman's fashion decision yesterday. I shared my knowledge with a stranger to make their day a little sweeter, and I helped to bring beautiful artwork into someones closet across the country.

It's exciting and slightly scary when you come face to face with what you love to do. Honestly, I always knew what I loved doing, but how to find work doing this seemed eons away, and frankly I faced more rejections than I care to remember.
I've by no means just landed a dream lucrative position, but I actually feel like I'm good at what I enjoy. To some this may seem obvious, but when you realize it's true it opens up a world of dreams with new found confidence.

So all in all friends, keep your options and your mind open, and do what you love. Don't get freaked out (or calm down those around you when you do) when you have a minor meltdown. They happen.
Also, FYI, this little corner of the blogosphere is where I get to practice what I love no matter the bumps in the road in the real world. So thanks for sticking with me...

Time Saving Weekend Staple

This weekend I co-ordinated multiple out of town guests for the boy's surprise birthday weekend celebration. It required plenty of emailing, texting, and struggling to keep a secret, but was a total success!

Once everyone arrived, I didn't want to miss a second of wandering the city, laughing, and a delicious pitcher of margaritas.
I depended on a few funky staples to stay stylish and comfortable for the entire weekend.

One of my newest staples is a perfectly skinny and fabulously comfortable pair of Levi's 524 skinny jeans. I had seen the fun billboards around the city, but had yet to try them when I finally busted a hole in a "can't be decent" area of my 5 years old !IT Rising Starlets. These newbies came to the rescue. The Levi's are slim through the leg and super long for heels, but can be delicately cuffed for springy flats (I did both).

These come in a bunch of great washes, and I think the grey will be next for my closet.

I know this is supposed to be the season for super wide leg denim, but these were so incredibly versatile that the bar is set pretty high for any wide leg new comers.
The only time I took them off during the entire weekend was Sunday... when I crashed into my post celebratory comma.

Power Dressing

A few weeks ago I was shopping with the grumpy, when he pointed out a tie as a "power tie." Sure enough it was exactly what you would see on a hard nosed corporate played in a blockbuster movie.

For women, there are similar stereotypical types of 'power dressing,' but we are well versed on my avoidance of traditional suits. Too many buttons on a blazer makes my skin crawl, and throwing in a matching bottom, I can only imagine, would bring on a case of full blown hives.

But this week, I knew it was time to launch some full on power dressing to support a necessary mind set. I have a new schedule, new responsibilities, new goals and new motivation. Here is a breakdown of power dressing for the creative corporateer, the beat of her drum business woman, and all general kick-ass get it done queen bees.

Monday, I kicked off the week with a bold colored dress. The stand up collar and bracelet sleeves of my Plenty by Tracy Reese dress provided the classic shape illusion of a button down blouse. Still, the pattern and colors reflected the stellar ideas bubbeling inside. Oh and a day full of compliments is a nice bonus. I anchored the look with sturdy, classic boots. A chunky heel means no wobbeling, very important when standing your ground.

Today, I wore a classic office bottom: a tweed knee grazing skirt. I injected some personality in a very springy and strong cobalt blue trapeze cowl neck top. You may have heard this morning that the trapeze silhouette is quickly becoming a closet staple of mine- I can't get enough of this quirky flattering shape that pairs perfectly with any slim bottom.

I paired this duo with solid tights and another sturdy stacked heel.

I love playing up these looks with a few chunky accessories, nothing delicicate in this power get up. One side note: the power woman persona walks the fine line of standing out, and out right distraction. Therefore, I resisted the urge for experiemental pattern mixing or overloaded bangles within the office.

It may only be Tuesday, but so far my attitude has stayed as upbeat and on track as my oufit, so I have a feeling this is a personal trend with staying power. Even if you aren't in the power role yet, dress for the job you want, and...like :)

Antiques and new props

Like I've mentioned before, I love finding new eclectic gems in my neighborhood, or wherever else I stumble upon them.

My newest find I actually found two weeks ago, and then thought about for the next 14 days before returning on Sunday. In our first encounter I was making my way to Bond St., but actually shot too far south and ended up on Houston...this is the story of my life when it comes to directions. So I walked down Houston to make a right when I bumped into an antique/flea market. There is a flea market near my apartment that I haven't ventured into because it contains everything from bikes and coats to stuffed animals and drug paraphernalia. This new find looked much more promising, but I was running late and had a bag for deliveries. The only thing that grabbed my attention was a large torso...and the sign that said Prop and Antique Market.

Fast forward to Sunday and I dragged my grumpy guy back downtown to hunt out what I knew was going to be a perfect project prop. After an hour, and a tour through Whole Foods (there was some sort of filming), the nice man started pulling out a variety of busts. Out of the plastic, male, and some with wheels, I was hooked on the lady in velvet, and impulse control completely fell apart.

I put some negotiating skills into action which I fully admit to never having actually used- it went something like this:
Me: "How much is this one?"
Chatty guy hauling treasures: "$40"
Me: "How much is that one?"
Chatty: "$30"
Me: "Well can this one be $30?"
Chatty (with a coy smile): "It can be"
Me: "Can it be now"
Chatty: "It can be"
Me: "If it is I will take it!"

Done and done, on a high of negotiating and treasure hunting adrenaline I floated/hauled my new goodie back uptown.
Now I just can't wait for this talented lady to take the piece back to, and beyond, her formal glory...stay tuned!

A New Model?

Within the fashion industry, the debate over size standards for models has been on going for a few years. Most people agree that the girls are too thin, too young, too unhealthy. But a picture is literally worth a thousand words and arguments.

In New York Magazine Herve Leger lays out his argument on the matter with a resounding, why? Having worked in the era of gorgeous, glowing top models, this new standard seems foreign and unnecessary. Beyond the fact that the girls are rail thin, why are they always frowning? All of the girls above are beautiful, but Crawford looks so much happier, like she's enjoying herself, and is loving the dress she is wearing- isn't that the ultimate selling point for an item?

It all circles back to my main idea on fashion, and a cornerstone of me starting this blog: Fashion is fun, it can be mood altering and transformational, but at the end of the day, it's just not that serious. Since having fun in the fashion is definitely an underlying motivation for purchase for me, I wonder if the industry will ever take a few steps back to the 90s.

Looking for the key

Today there seemed to be a collective, "What the hey is going on here?" around my office. Emails were firing around, boxes were showing up and quickly being taken away, and people were generally itching toward the door while simultaneously tethered to their email. Generally not an enjoyable situation.

Apparently, we were all in the same situation, looking for the key...
Sure maybe my co-workers questions weren't life altering, i.e why are 50,000 samples arriving at my cube? but there was definitely some inquisitive energy swirling around.

I am looking for the answers to a couple questions these days. Unfortunately the answers won't show up as a key and instead require one of my least favorite chores-hard decision making.
But thankfully it is periodically made simpler with the not so difficult temporary keys to my heart, a stockpile of sweets shipped from home and a furry paw helping me type.
These could also provide a good distraction...
